The ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero BTF is an AMD X870E ATX motherboard built for enthusiasts who want a clean, high-performance Ryzen build without cable clutter. Its BTF hidden-connector design routes motherboard power, GPU power, USB, and fan cables out of sight, while robust power delivery and AI-assisted tuning make it a capable platform for demanding workloads and overclocking.

Why this product

BTF hidden connectors for a clean build

Power, USB, and fan connectors are routed behind the board, keeping the front of the case free of cable clutter. The onboard GPU high-power slot can deliver up to 600 watts to a compatible ASUS BTF graphics card directly through the motherboard.

18+2+2 power stages for headroom

The teamed power solution uses 18 × 110A + 2 × 110A + 2 × 80A stages fed by dual ProCool II 8+8-pin EPS 12V connectors, giving Ryzen processors the sustained current they need under heavy loads.

Three PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots onboard

Five M.2 slots are fitted in total; the first three run PCIe 5.0 x4 (on Ryzen 9000/7000 platforms) and the remaining two run PCIe 4.0 x4 from the X870E chipset, covering both current and legacy storage.

Wi-Fi 7 with dual-band Ethernet

MediaTek Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be, up to 320 MHz, 6 GHz, 4096 QAM) with Bluetooth 5.4 runs alongside both Intel 2.5Gb and Realtek 5Gb wired Ethernet ports, so multiple network paths are available simultaneously.

USB4 and high-speed USB throughout

Two USB4 (40 Gbps) Type-C ports sit on the rear panel alongside eight USB 10 Gbps ports. Internal headers add USB 20 Gbps, 5 Gbps, and 2.0 connectivity for front-panel and peripheral needs.

SupremeFX audio with ESS Quad DAC

The ALC4082 codec pairs with an ESS ES9219 Quad DAC for 7.1 surround output, delivering up to 32-bit/384 kHz playback at 120 dB SNR and 110 dB SNR recording, backed by gold-plated jacks and optical S/PDIF out.

  • Fits AMD AM5 socket processors: Ryzen 9000, Ryzen 8000, and Ryzen 7000 Series desktop CPUs.
  • DDR5 memory up to 256 GB across four DIMM slots; supports AMD EXPO, ASUS AEMP, and NitroPath DRAM Technology.
  • ATX form factor — fits standard ATX and full-tower cases.
  • The BTF GPU high-power slot (up to 600 W) requires a compatible ASUS BTF ROG Strix, ROG Astral, or TUF Gaming graphics card. Standard graphics cards use the PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot as normal.
  • PCIe 5.0 x4 speed on M.2 slots 1–3 requires a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 Series processor; Ryzen 8000 Series support for those slots should be verified against AMD's official compatibility list.
  • Not compatible with AMD AM4 or any Intel platform — AM5 CPUs only.

Best for

  • Cable-management enthusiasts who want a showcase build — the BTF hidden-connector design eliminates the most visible cable runs in a typical build.
  • Overclockers and power users who need headroom: the 18+2+2 power stage configuration and Dynamic OC Switcher support sustained high-frequency operation on Ryzen 9000 processors.
  • Storage-heavy workstations — five M.2 slots (three at PCIe 5.0 x4) plus four SATA 6 Gb/s ports can accommodate a large array of fast drives simultaneously.
  • Networked or streaming setups where both wired speed and wireless flexibility matter: dual Ethernet (2.5 Gb + 5 Gb) and Wi-Fi 7 provide multiple high-bandwidth paths.
  • Audio-focused builds that benefit from the SupremeFX ALC4082 + ESS ES9219 Quad DAC, avoiding the need for a dedicated sound card in most desktop use cases.

Trade-offs

  • AMD AM4 or Intel builds — this board is AM5-only and is physically incompatible with all non-AM5 processors.
  • Budget or value-focused builds — the feature set (BTF connectors, Wi-Fi 7, dual Ethernet, five M.2 slots, USB4) targets enthusiast budgets rather than cost-conscious configurations.
  • Builders committed to a non-ASUS BTF GPU — the 600 W hidden GPU power slot only activates with compatible ASUS BTF graphics cards; other GPUs connect conventionally.
  • DDR4 memory users — the four DIMM slots are DDR5-only; existing DDR4 kits cannot be reused.
