Hitachi-LG GP60NS60 Slim Portable DVD Writer - Silver USB 2.0
The Hitachi-LG GP60NS60 Slim Portable DVD Writer is a compact external optical drive designed for laptop and ultrabook users who need to read and write discs without carrying bulky hardware. At just 14mm tall, it slips into a bag alongside a thin notebook and connects via a single USB cable, with no separate power supply required. It supports a wide range of disc formats including M-DISC for long-term data archiving, and is compatible with both Windows 10 and Mac OS.
Why this product
M-DISC support for long-term archiving
It supports M-DISC media, which uses a rock-like recording layer instead of organic dye to store data. M-DISC has been tested to outlast standard DVDs on the market.
Super Multi format compatibility
It reads and writes across a broad range of formats including DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-R, CD-RW and CD-ROM, so you can use whichever media suits the task.
Silent Play reduces disc noise
Silent Play technology detects multimedia content and automatically adjusts playback speed to minimise drive noise during video or audio playback.
Slim 14mm profile for ultrabook users
The drive measures only 14mm high, making it a practical companion for thin laptops and ultrabooks where an internal optical drive is absent.
TV connectivity via USB cable
It can connect directly to TVs, digital photo frames and PCs using a standard USB cable, letting you play media on a wider range of screens.

Best for
- Ultrabook and thin laptop owners who have no internal optical drive and need occasional disc access.
- Archiving important files using M-DISC media, which is rated to outlast standard DVDs.
- Multi-format disc users who work with a mix of DVD and CD types and want one drive to handle all of them.
- Users who value quiet operation, as Silent Play reduces noise during multimedia playback.
- Portable workflows where a lightweight, bus-powered drive is more practical than a desktop unit.
Trade-offs
- Blu-ray playback or authoring — this drive does not support any Blu-ray formats.
- High-volume disc burning — the 0.75MB buffer and 8x DVD write speed are suited to occasional rather than batch use.
- Users needing the fastest interface — it uses USB 2.0, which is the interface standard on this unit.
- Desktop replacement use — the tray-loading slim design is optimised for portability, not sustained heavy-duty access.
TV Connectivity Enjoy your media on your TVs, digital photo frames and PCs by simply connecting your drive with USB cable.
Superior data protection with M-DISC™ Support The M-DISC™ uses a patent rock-like recording surface instead of organic dye to etch your data onto a disc. The M-DISC has been tested and proven to outlast standard DVDs currently on the market.
Silent Play The Silent Play technology helps reduce noise during playback by recognizing different multimedia and automatically adjusting the playback speed according to its criteria for optimal performance.
