A 2.5" SATA drive for replacing a mechanical hard disk in an existing laptop or desktop. It's the entry-level option — enough to make an older machine feel responsive, without the price of a high-end drive.

Why this product

Drops into any 2.5" bay

Standard 100 x 69.9 x 7 mm body, so it fits the bay an existing laptop or desktop hard disk already occupies.

No moving parts

Rated to 2.17 G vibration in operation and 20 G at rest, which is what makes it suited to laptops.

Runs cool and quiet

0.279 W average draw, 0.195 W at idle, and no noise at all.

Three-year warranty

Limited three-year cover with free technical support, and a rated life of one million hours MTBF.

  • Laptops and desktops with a 2.5" drive bay
  • Backwards compatible with SATA Rev. 2.0 systems
  • Needs a SATA data and power connector — no cables or bracket included
  • Not an M.2 or NVMe drive — won't fit an M.2 slot

Best for

  • Reviving an older laptop or desktop that still has a mechanical hard disk
  • Machines with no M.2 slot, where SATA is the only upgrade path
  • Portable use — no moving parts and a 2.17 G operating vibration rating
  • Low-power or fanless builds where a 0.279 W average draw matters

Trade-offs

  • Not intended for servers. Kingston specifies this drive for desktop and notebook workloads only.
  • SATA caps the ceiling. 500 MB/s is the interface limit — with a free M.2 slot, an NVMe drive is several times quicker.
  • Slower writes than the larger capacities. This variant writes at up to 320 MB/s against 450 MB/s on the 480GB and 960GB.
  • Slower writes than the larger capacities. This variant writes at up to 350 MB/s against 450 MB/s on the 480GB and 960GB.
  • Halved bandwidth on older machines. It runs in a SATA Rev. 2.0 system, but at 3 Gb/s rather than 6.
